So Far, So Good
First, let me clarify that the TV is, in fact, native 1080p. No question about it.
Second, the panel on this TV is made by Samsung, and the quality is excellent.
Third, TCL's website has a find service center location search and it is quite extensive ..
Based on the two year warrantee, what I am seeing with my TV and Amazons excellent delivery, I'm giving this set a Best Buy rating ..
UPDATE 11/16/2010 .. this set is just plain excellent .. and Amazon service is top of the line .. my set developed a thin blue vertical line, I contacted Amazon, they picked up the set the next day and delivered a new set at the same time .. hard to beat that ..
Update 11/17/2010 .. it's a bit tiresome getting messages from folks who 1) don't have the TV and want to slam it in a public review 2)Know little to nothing about TV's .. I had an electronic repair business for 10 years and I've worked on a lot of TV's .. so I know what I'm talking about .. any TV by any maker is not 100% perfect 100% of the time .. I stand by the fact that this is a great set .. hey, if you don't want to buy it, go get something from the local 'Mart or what not .. or get nothing at all .. matters not to me .. I think you'll be missing out on a great deal, however ..
UPDATE 12/08/2010 .. Thanks to Original Aspect Ratio .... you might try this on any remote and see if it works .. what have you got to lose .. ?? .. keep in mind that this TV has been branded as RCA in the past ..
I have a Logitech Harmony remote. When I select "RCA L32HD41" the tv works 100% as far as I can tell.

A 2-D Review of a 3-D TV. Great TV., November 15, 2010

Disclaimer: First I'd like to say that I do not have the equipment to view this set's 3-D picture yet. I bought it as a hedge against 3-D. I'm not sure if 3-D is going to take off, but if it does I know I'm ready for it. I thought I would get that out of the way so while you will know I cannot review that feature of the TV, I still have a lot to tell. Now on with the show...
The Panasonic comes shipped in a conveniently designed box where you simply punch out four inserts and lift the box top off of the base. Sort of like when you get a cake from the bakery in a plastic container. Inside's the TV, the stand, the remote (and batteries), the power cord, and the owner's manual. Attaching the swiveling base is very simple and involves screwing a metal fork onto the base then slipping the TV onto the fork and screwing it down. The whole process takes 5 minutes and I was able to do it without any assistance. Also, I'd like to mention that Amazon shipped the TV through a company called HomeDirectUSA. They were very professional and opened the box for me to make sure the TV was undamaged.
Looks wise the Panasonic isn't much. It's framed in a piano black trim and is about 3 inches deep. The base is also done in piano black with a chrome band around the edge. At the bottom of the TV's frame is a bronze colored streak. Overall it's a classy look, but also nothing special. On the lower edge of the TV are the 3-D glasses' transmitters and the remote sensor. On the left side of the TV are various buttons (channel, volume, menu, input, and power) along with a few inputs (HDMI, composite video, and an SD card slot) and two USB ports (for hooking up the wireless dongle amongst other things). On the back of the set (on the set's left side viewed from the front) are two HDMI, two components, one composite, one RF/coaxial, and a PC input. There is also an optical audio out. The TV's build quality is very good, the materials are nice, and it feels sturdy overall. Lastly, the included remote is long and narrow, but well laid out with large buttons that light up.
Using TV is straightforward and easy. It guides you through the set-up, scans for channels, sets up the network, and sets the clock. The menu system is logically laid out and easy to use. The picture controls are many and allow you to fine tune precisely, although the pro-setting are only available in Custom picture mode. Besides Custom mode there is Vivid, Standard, THX, and Game modes. Each mode can be tweaked individually and set up differently for each input. Some of the features included with the Panasonic are 5 individual timers to turn the TV on and off and a sleep timer. There is also VieraLink that, if the TV is connected to the Internet, allows you to view YouTube or Netflix among other services (I have not used this feature since I stream that content through my Blu-ray player). You can insert an SD card or a USB jump drive into the set and view photos, videos, or listen to MP3 files as well. This feature worked well when I inserted an SD card from my Canon camera and the photos looked very nice on the screen. Another nice feature is being able to set channels as your favorites so you can jump to them more quickly, or have the channel only scan favorites when you go up and down channels. Features to reduce burn-in include a pixel orbiter (which very slightly shifts the picture to prevent burn-in) and a scrolling bar pattern that wipes a white bar over a black screen for 15 minutes. While burn-in is much less of an issues with plasma sets then it used to be, if you like to watch non-high definition TV with the bars on the side, or play video games and pause them for a long time, plasma may not be the best bet for you. Finally, there are light sensors on the front of the TV to allow the set to adjust its brightness based on ambient light conditions.
Picture quality on the Panasonic is where this TV shows it mettle. I have the set hooked up in the following manner. My LG Blu-ray player and Nintendo Wii are hooked up to my Onkyo receiver, which is in turn hooked into the Panasonic via HDMI. The Blu-ray is hooked into the receiver using HDMI and the Wii using composite video. For cable, I use the RF/coaxial input. I am not a videophile and tweaked the picture menu myself where I settled on the Vivid setting with some adjustments to make it considerably less vivid (usually I hate vivid mode but I like it on this set). I find the picture looks best when I leave the automatic adjustment for ambient light on. I also have the TV set-up to show 95% of the image where the edges are cropped off so I don't view any image breakdown at the picture's edge. Watching any high definition content, be it Blu-ray, cable TV, or streaming Netflix, the picture looks its best with great detail and clarity (this is especially true when watching Blu-ray discs). Watching standard definition content doesn't look bad either, obviously it doesn't look great stretched out to 50", but the details hold up well and it's more than acceptable. Regardless of the source, the colors are accurate, the dynamic range is great with deep and detailed shadows, and there is no motion blur even when playing video games or watching animated content. My previous television was a 32" 720p LCD and compared to the LCD the plasma Panasonic looks more "fluid" and "film-like". The details don't jump out at you like they do on a high end LCD set (sometimes obnoxiously), but the picture is clear and sharp none the less. The screen has an anti-reflective coating that seems to work well. I have the set in a room with two big windows on the west side and I adjust the blinds when necessary to keep the sun's reflections off the screen. In the end, a plasma is no worse in this regard than a traditional tube television. Overall, I am very pleased with the picture and am a plasma convert.
The TV's built-in speakers are fine for casual viewing, but if you want a true big-screen experience you're going to want to hook this set up to at least a 2.1 system, if not a full blown 7.2 system. Mine is hooked up to a 5.1 system.
Speaking of sounds, I don't notice any humming from the set. Occasionally, if I have muted the sound and a bright white scene comes on I hear a slight hum, but it's barely noticeable and goes away as soon as the scene changes. Also, the set does not give off much heat as far as I can tell.
There are only a few negatives I have about the set and they are as follows: 1) The piano black trim on the set shows reflections much worse than the screen itself. 2) The set only has 3 HDMI inputs, most have 4. 3) The remote sensor is very low on the set and I have my center speaker in front of the TV so I have to angle the remote upward in order for the signal to reach the TV.
All in all... a great plasma set, with tons of inputs, features, and adjustability, but an especially great picture quality.

11/24/2010 Update: Hitting the sub-menu button on the remote allows you to quickly change the behavior of the channel up/down button. For instance you can have it scan only your favorites, or just the digital channels. This is a nice touch, and a nice shortcut.

The Good:
*Vibrant colors--of which ancient, grunting, CRT-watching man could only dream.
*HD content is displayed so realistically I'll quit my job and live under a bridge to watch TV all day.
*Even standard-def shows look quite good on this set, like super models only five or ten years past their prime.
*Black levels are significantly deeper than I would have expected based on all the online whinging about edge-lit LED screens (e.g., "Give me local dimming, or give me death!").
*Supa-thin profile makes the compact fluorescent "flat" panels look McDonald's chubby.
The Tolerable:
*Crowded buttons on the remote, which I hardly use in favor of the cable company's universal (or maybe no more than planetary) remote. I'll only pick up the Samsung remote on occasion to adjust advanced settings, but when I do, I often push an unintended button.
*Very slight edge-lit brightness on black borders. Much of what's on TV will fill the screen, so you won't even have the opportunity to notice the effect. Really, it's not that bad--I've seen far worse light leakage while watching movies on my 2007 alum iMac.
The Tolerated:
*There's only one thing that bugs me a bit, and it's not a deal breaker. (Besides, I already bought the TV, so the deal has been, well. . . concluded, if you must.) When the screen is mostly black and only a small graphic is displayed somewhere, the LEDs go a bit dim--you can actually see, over a fraction of a second, the light levels drop. I'm assuming that the TV was set up this way so that the LEDs wouldn't be leaking ghostly light on a largely black screen. I've fussed with the settings, but I can't make this effect go away. I haven't yet fully explored all the setting menus, so I just might hit pay dirt soon, or maybe Samsung will nix that effect with a firmware update. At any rate, whatever text is dimmed is still very legible, and when the next screen-filling scene pops up, the LEDs power up without any detectable delay so that thereafter the screen's as bright as it should be. No biggie--it's not enough of a problem for me to scratch a star off the rating.
The Tweakable:
*Turning off motion smoothing is not difficult under most circumstances; indeed, some content begs to be smooved, e.g., sports and competitive cooking shows. But when I first plugged in a movie via the USB drive, I got motion smooving by default and wanted none of it. Whenever I pushed the remote's "Menu" button, I ended on a screen far, far away from the USB drive's content, and ended up adjusting the picture settings for the cable feed and not the target movie on the USB drive. I was bedeviled awhile, but a bit of snooping around the owner's manual led to this minor discovery: by pressing the "Tools" button on the Samsung remote, I could enter a submenu that let me turn off the smooving effect without leaving the movie. Cheap soap opera video effect, begone!
Conclusion:
The picture is what matters most, and this TV's output makes my jaw drop to the floor. Which is rather fortuitous, because I need something down there to catch my eyeballs.

This little LCD hasn't got the credit it deserves, (3.5 stars ??). We got this LCD to replace a 15 year old 26 inch RCA tube TV in our bedroom. We were contemplating a 26 inch LCD, but decided to go with the 22 inch. We are very big fans of all TVs Panasonic; 1 plasma, 1 TAU and now 1 LCD. It has beautiful imagery and great sound. The menu is very intuitive with many options to fine tune the picture and audio. Speakers are just fine for a bedroom. The docking system is great. Our room is 12x12 and I can't believe these reviewers that put a 42 inch TV in their 12x12 bedrooms. Way too big. With the lights on the TV appears small but the picture is so clear and crisp it makes up for it. All text is very easy to read from 10 feet away. With the lights off you would be hard pressed to guess it's only a 22 inch. If you need to upgrade a TV for your bedroom, this TV is an excellent choice.

This is the first LCD TV I've bought so I did a tone of research before finally settling on this unit.
Things I love about this TV:
-The backlight on this thing turns way up so you don't have to worry about having dark scenes like in Interview with the vampire you can't see. The wide viewing angle is also great.
-On the quick menu you can easily change the sound between Music and Cinema and I can actually hear the difference. Yes they are tv speakers not surround sound but for my studio apartment it is more then adequate.
-I noticed I was getting a little noise on the sound when I had the Clear Voice on but totally fixed it when I put the Auto Volume option on in the audio main menu.
-I keep the tv on a lot for music during the day since I work from home and there is this great button on the remote labeled energy where you can quickly adjust from 100% which is the best for viewing to maximum energy saving. I like this not only for the energy savings but also to save the back light from 100% constant use.
-I noticed that one of my shows off of my Roku (digital box that streams netflix) wasn't HD and the picture wasn't looking to hot. I adjusted on the picture main menu the aspect ratio to Just Scan and it actually cleaned it up really nicely. This is important,several of my friends have really ritzy tv set ups but if it's not HD the picture is almost unbearable. This one you can watch older movies/tv shows and HD without having to fiddle with everything to get a good picture.
-Overall picture quality can be adjusted by so many advanced options that if you play with it I'm sure you can get exactly what you want.
-I know it is 720 versus 1080 but at this price range when I looked at the specs if you go for 1080 it seems that you will get dark spots in dark scenes and it's refresh rate will be so low that you will notice it in quick scenes plus the audio seemed unreliable. I think at this 32inch size 720 is really not that noticeable.
Very satisfied customer. Only complaint is you need 4 screws to attach the tv to it's base and my baggy only came with 3 in it. Luckily the hardware store is right down the street so I was able to get something comparable instead of waiting for them to ship it.
Do your self a favor, get some good HDMI cables with noise reduction that can handle full HD (found some on amazon for like $7). I haven't experienced any blurring at all on this tv while watching movies/shows like others have commented about. Regular cables don't cut it and you won't want to wait when your tv arrives.

Another fantastic Panasonic Product, By J. Blais

Bought this TV for the bedroom. It has a fantastic picture and great sound quality. One great feature is the automatic picture adjustment based on the room ambient lighting, saves having to mess around with the picture when you flip on the side table lamp. Also the factory color presets actually support the intended display, example: cinema setting looks more like film.
The only thing this set doesn't have that I would have like is an IP/Ethernet port. Otherwise I am extremely happy. Plenty of HDMI ports too.

After trying two other flat screen TVs and studying different models in showrooms and on the the web, my wife and I gave this model a try. My wife can be very sensitive to the intensity of an LCD TV picture and one thing she likes about this TV is that is has great adjustments for contrast, brightness, etc. In particular, the "Cinema" setting tones the brightness down and gives good picture clarity. She can also select a picture size or formatting that makes videos, widescreen or full screen DVDs, etc., all look good. Furthermore, there is no noticeable blurring. Overall the quality of the picture is superb, and it was worth paying a little more for the 1080p. Even TV programs not broadcast in high-def look great. In addition, unlike other TVs, the speakers provide sound of sufficient volume and excellent quality. I also like that it has plenty of inputs (including 3 HDMI, 1 component, and 2 composite inputs). Its ability to interface with SD cards and computers is also neat. And, in my limited experience, Panasonic has excellent customer service, with personnel who, in general, are more knowledgeable than most I have talked with at Samsung in regards to that company's products. My only complaint is that the only audio output on this TV is digital/optical (for new "home entertainment" systems), which, apparently, is the direction newer LCD TVs this size and up are going. Sometimes I need to use headphones when I am playing something to which my wife does not want to listen. In order to do this I connect my Blu-Ray/VHS/or satellite box output to the input of a little 2 watt amplifier I have and run the headphones off of that, using the amplifier's volume control, with the TV volume on "mute". I would like for this TV to have a 1/8" audio output. In spite of that, in my opinion it is worth 5 stars.

I have owned this tv for only about 1 week, but here are my early impressions:
I tried two different HDTVs before purchasing this one. Both were edge-lit LED and both exhibited some clouding and flashlighting (very bright screen in the corners). I took a chance on this Sony based on the quality of my past Sony products and comments/reviews from others. I have not been disappointed.

First off, I would like to praise Amazon for getting this TV to me quickly and in one piece. From the time I ordered it to plugging it in was less than 6 days! Pilot was the delivery company and I have nothing but nice things to say about them.
From the moment you take it out of the box you have to like the look of this tv. The front panel is all glass--no plastic bezel around the outside. It is a handsome tv. It is also quite heavy.

I installed it on the included base and it sits on a low bookcase. It does swivel and the base install instructions give some cryptic indication that it tilts 6 degrees. Not sure about that one and I didn't try to force it.

Right out of the box the picture is very good. Setup is easy and with some very simple picture adjustments you will be enjoying your tv.

I have windows that are directly behind me as I view the tv, but I was amazed that the glare is not overly-distracting. Yes, there is glare, but it does not diminish the view or picture quality. Your tolerance for such things may vary. I have blinds and a curtain I can draw for daytime viewing, and there is no problem at all there.
As a 3D tv, the verdict is still out. The Alice in Wonderland movie I received in the bundle with the tv does not play in my PS3, so I cannot make an evaluation of 3D movies. A couple of 3D games are available for the Playstation, and they look pretty good, particularly Wipeout HD. A very good 3D experience. I don't know much about 3D picture quality (cross-talk, ghosting, etc.), but it looks pretty cool to me.

You can simulate 3D, but it really is a poor substitute and doesn't enhance the viewing much. This is the part of 3D that is pure novelty.

I honestly don't care much about the 3D aspect, as this will take some time to develop. There is so little 3D content out there, it is not worth upgrading to 3D if you are happy with your current TV. I purchased this tv because it is probably the best 2D set at this price range.

The problem I had with other LEDs was the edge-lit technology. The brightness was inconsistent. This Sony uses a "Dynamic" edge LED backlight. This is Sony-speak indicating that it provides more precise control of the LED. There is no clouding or flashlighting or other inconsistent bright spots in the picture. The blacks are very dark and the bright scenes are vivid, but not overly bright or saturated in color.

The Motionflow 240Hz technology refers to the refresh rate of the screen. It is an improvement over 60Hz found on earlier LCDs, but most people probably could not tell the difference between 240Hz and 120Hz (found on most newer LED/LCD). I wouldn't buy this tv just because of 240Hz, but it certainly enhances the total viewing experience.

Once you activate the tv via Sony, you can use the Internet video and audio functions. There are dozens of video applications from Netflix, YouTube, Amazon on Demand, and Hulu+, to epicurious.com, crackle.com, and other similarly obscure video sites. They are good time wasters and work very well. I stream Netflix and Pandora and have had no troubles at all. I have it hard-wired for internet (I have an unreliable router), but I tested the built-in wireless-N wifi, and there were no problems.

Additionally there are plenty of energy-saving features included (LED tvs are more energy-efficient anyway). Of course, the most energy-saving thing you can do is to unplug it and read a book.

The Bravia snyc is great. I have a Sony AV and one remote will operate them both. You can run all your peripherals to the Amp and need just one HDMI to the TV. Of course, your setup will be different. I have an older PS3 that the remote will not operate, but I have heard that the new PS3 slims can take advantage of the Bravia sync (as well as bluray, cd, etc.)

**EDIT** the new "slim" PS3 does use Bravia snyc, and you can use the TV remote to operate the bluray!**

Negatives:
The Internet widgets (not to be confused with the apps) are slow and pointless. Maybe the will improve on that in the future.

You have to buy the 3D transmitter separately. I don't know why they couldn't build it into the tv. Yes, the glasses are expensive, but to have to buy the transmitter too, is an insult. Just make sure you get a bundle deal to save some $$.
The only other negative--and what keeps this tv from getting a perfect 5 stars--is the horrible speakers. I have heard better sounding transistor radios. I have fiddled with the settings over and over, and I still cannot get a decent sound out of this tv. I have it connected to a Sony home theatre, but don't like power it on just for tv (kind of an energy waste, I think), but sometimes it's necessary.

A very long review, but to sum up:
Excellent (2D) picture, convenient Internet apps, included wireless-N wifi, and eye-catching styling. No early warning flags regarding 3D picture quality. Horrible audio. Overall I give it 9 out of 10.
**UPDATE**
I got the Alice movie to work in my PS3, so I had the opportunity to watch in 3D. The effect is very nice. With this particular movie 3D made it better. Any movie that uses a lot of CGI will benefit from 3D. When watching 3D, the screen gets a little darker, so you may have to adjust your picture options to compensate. I did not find it to be a problem as we watched in a dark room. The glasses are a little heavy and became a bit painful on my nose after about an hour. A small piece of foam (like a thick moleskin type product) on the nosepads will reduce the pain. Also, you cannot lie down or even lean slightly askew while watching, as this will negate most, if not all, of the 3D effect. Sit up straight young man! No slouching!
Make no mistake, the 3D is still a novelty at this stage, but having a quality 3D feature on one of the best-looking 2D tvs I have seen is an added bonus. I highly recommend this TV. I have bumped the star rating to 5 out of 5 (from 4/5) because the 3D element makes up for the poor sound.

Ok, first of i took a risk on buying one because the bundle was so good an offer from Sony. Though like many i bought a sony bravia 40' 2 years ago, i always wanted to get a big screen to change the 42" westington house i had from 4 years ago. My finance and i went to sony style store just to check it out and it only took us 5 minutes to decide to get one after watching a few things on the screen in 3D. My finance was complaining about my Gizmo habits so i promised her i'm not buying anything but instead she wanted it more than i did.

Now about the TV..WOW the picture quality will blow your mind. Watching 3D with my Comcast HD Box by turn on 3D was more than i expected. Tried a regular blu-ray with 3D and i was like WOW. Played the free games that came with the purchase on PS3, it takes gaming to another level.

The only little problem i noticed is when you turn on the 3D it takes about 10 seconds for your eyes to get adjusted to the 3D. I heard a lot about getting headaches and feeling of throwing up but nothing of that sort happen to me nor my finance who wears glasses.

I know there is a hugh hole in my pocket now but its worth every line of thread it took out. If you had the money, id recommend you get on, if not then wait for the price to come down and you won't regret it.

Stunning TV and good sound, March 10, 2010

About me: First HDTV, but I am an Electrical/Software Engineer so I have a high level of technical ability, with a low expectations. I have been micro analysing which TV to buy for far to long. I attended CES in 2009 and 2010, and have seen all of the new TV that are coming out (probably why I kept waiting so long). This is the perception from which this review was written.

I received this TV yesterday and watched it for most of the evening. Very good picture! I was considering the LG55lh40 but after viewing the Samsung LN55B650 side by side with the LG at Best Buy my wife and I realized there was little competition. We had the tech at best buy let us mess with the settings for around half an hour (starting with the auto-calibration from LG) but just couldn't get it to look right compared with the Samsung. I was rather upset, as I have read numerous great reviews about the LG and it was a considerably cheaper price. Logging into Amazon I noticed the LN55C650 was on sale for $1620 (even cheaper than last years B series) but had no reviews, so I was a little nervous to order it. Hindsight is 20/20 and I definitely made the right choice. The picture is very clear and has that crisp look that Samsung is famous for.

My surround sound system will not be delivered until today, so I was stuck using the built in speakers last night. I was very impressed with the sound this thing could pump out. I varied the sound between 25 and 50 (out of 100) and it was more than loud enough and filled the room nicely. This is by no means comparable to a nice sound system, but compared to any other TV I have heard, it is definitely up there in sound capabilities.

Looks wise, I think this is much better looking than last years B650. I didn't care for the red touch of color that surrounded the whole TV. This model only seems to have the red at the bottom center, and it adds a really nice accent without being overpowering like I felt last years were. This is just a personal opinion.

Cons:
The 120HZ feature, which was heavily complained about in the LN55B650 still has problems. The first thing I did when I got the TV was watch The Dark Knight BD (1080P) on my PS3 using a V1.3 Cat2 HDMI cable. I thought something was wrong with the TV as it was doing very strange things with background motion, but after turning the 120HZ feature off the picture cleaned up perfectly and I no longer notice any problems while watching it. I tried all of the different 120HZ modes, and they all had the same problem. That said, I turned it back on while watching HDTV (720p obviously) and it seems very clean with the 120HZ.

It is 2010 and they still can't put a wireless radio built into the television? I find this to be ridiculous that you have to purchase a separate module in order to get wireless. My router is very far away from my TV and it will be expensive to have network cables added.

I will update this if I notice any other issues.

I bought this LCD/DVD TV combo for my wife so she can watch her movies on DVD in the kitchen and she loves it. It's just the right size and weight to be moved around to suit her viewing needs. The speaker are very loud for this unit and I sometimes have to tell her to turn it down a bit. The picture quality is good but not as good as my Sony Bravia unit. The colors don't seems as rich to me but my wife said she doesn't notice any difference. So given that, I gave it 5 stars. I don't know about the longevity of Toshiba. I have mostly own Sony TVs. If there are any issues, I will keep you posted. BTW, there were NO dead pixels too which is great. Given the price, it's a good bargain.

PICTURE

In terms of video quality, this TV is awesome. I can't imagine how the picture could be much better.

There are some minor picture quality issues with off-angle viewing (as the CNET review states), but I think CNET exaggerates the severity -- it's only noticeable to me if I'm far off center.

I haven't yet noticed any blooming effects.

Setting the "judder reduction" to 10 introduces some distortion at times, but a setting of 6 smoothes out motion well without noticeable distortion. However, this varies a bit with different source material. When viewing video files via DLNA that have a lower frame rate, the judder reduction setting can sometimes make things worse. But this is easy to turn off/on by source.

The color level seemed slightly off initially, even with CNET's recommended settings. For example, sometimes a blue sky would look slightly purple (i.e., too much red). But this was easily adjusted in the picture settings.

AUDIO

I don't use the TV's audio, since I have an external speaker setup. However, the TV's audio seemed a bit bland when I tried it.

Unfortunately, digital audio output from the TV does not pass through multi-channel audio from HDMI inputs. You need to run extra digital audio cables from your DVD player and other components to your AV receiver if you'd like Dolby Digital or DTS sound.

ENERGY

I measured the electricity usage at 110-115 watts (energy saving mode at "auto", volume off, picture adjusted per CNET recommendation). Setting energy saving mode to auto doesn't seem to hurt the picture quality at all.

This is very energy efficient -- it uses less power than my old 32" CRT TV. I'm amazed at how little heat I can feel coming from the back of the set.

REMOTE

If you have a universal learning remote, it will not be able to learn from the RF remote that comes with this TV (i.e., since standard remotes are IR rather than RF). However, I called Samsung and they sent me a compatible IR remote, free of charge. With that remote, I was able to program my universal learning remote. Ask for remote BN59-00851A.

BUILD QUALITY

One small build quality issue that I encountered: the plastic at the base of my TV extended a bit too far, making it impossible to fit it into the stand. I had to carve away some of the plastic in the slots of the stand just to get it to fit, which made me a bit uneasy. But other than that, the build quality is fine.

MEDIA FEATURES

Viewing video files via DLNA works well, for the file types that are supported. Although I've encountered many files that the TV doesn't play for one reason or another, the ones that it does play work well. I regularly stream 1080p video files from my PC, and the picture looks perfect (with wired Ethernet).

The TV has a variety of Internet and media features. But unfortunately there are lots of quality issues such as:

1. When playing video files through USB, DLNA, or Internet features, most TV controls are disabled. While you can adjust basic picture settings, you can't choose 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios. In playing NTSC video (i.e., any video that came from standard def TV, home movies, etc) from USB or DLNA, the aspect ratio is *always wrong*: 16:9 video is always squeezed too thin and 4:3 video is always stretched too fat.

2. There is no fast forward, rewind, or chapter advance when playing video clips or movies. This is true of playing YouTube videos as well. Although there is a "skip" feature where you can jump in increments (e.g., 10 seconds), this is only available for some video files (most don't support this, in my experience).

3. As the CNET review stated, the Yahoo widgets are extremely slow to start. Note that this has nothing to do with your Internet speed, since I have a 25 Mbit Internet service with wired Ethernet to the TV and it's still painfully slow. I have an HD TiVo with a lot of the same features as the Yahoo widgets, and that is far more enjoyable to use. But the one area where the Yahoo widgets outperformed TiVo was YouTube -- the Yahoo YouTube widget can play HD video clips as HD but TiVo plays them as SD.

4. If a media file played through DLNA (and I assume USB) has multiple audio channels, there is no way to choose which audio to play along with the video.

5. Does not support DTS audio.

I assume that these problems exist with all Samsung TVs with the Media 2.0 feature. Perhaps these problems will be fixed in a future software update. If so, I'll post an update (*** still no fixes to these issues as of 5/9/10 ***).

Got the LG55LE8500 TV about 3 weeks ago. So far I am very happy with the TV. anything HD looks great and blu ray is just amazing. black is black on this tv and colors are quite accurate. as great as this tv is, it does have its cons. analog cable tv does not look very good at all on this set. the screen is a borderless glass screen which can be quite reflective during dark scenes especially if you have a very well lit up room. also you will see some horizontal banding(lines) across the screen on bright blue background scenes at times. some people are going to be annoyed by this, others wont care or even notice it. overall, this tv is supposed to be the 2nd best model of LGs LED tvs and it lives up to it. its not the cheapest of TVs but price compared to equivalent Samsung models, its well worth it as far as build and picture quality go.

I bought three new 32-inch LCD TVs in one week, and returned the first two because of faulty video inputs. The third TV I bought is this high-quality, Panasonic TC-L32X2 TV, which was just released in February 2010. My experience enabled me to compare three similar TVs, giving me good insight to write this review.

I initially bought two other 32-inch LCD TVs; a Vizio VO320E and a Sony BRAVIA BX 300 Series (model KDL-32BX300). I returned both of them because of identical video input problems. I connected two different brands of DVD players to each TV, and when I played DVDs, there were alternating horizontal stripes of discoloration on the screen, indicating a problem with the video inputs on the TVs. I returned both TVs to the retailer because both of these DVD players worked perfectly on two other TVs in my house, including a one-year-old Panasonic plasma.

Then I bought the Panasonic TC-L32X2 TV listed here. After the initial setup, the first thing I tested was the video output from a DVD player, and was relieved to find that the video was crisp and clear, with no stripes of discoloration like on the other two TVs. Then I flipped through the channels from a direct cable TV input (no cable box), and the TV output was excellent as well, and definitely better than the other two TVs that I had to return. Also, the build of the TV was noticeably of higher quality than the other two TVs. The remote has plenty of features, and is not cheap (like the ones that came with other two TVs).

This Panasonic TC-L32X2 TV comes with one cable TV input, one set of component video inputs (red/blue/green video and red/white audio), two sets of composite video inputs (red/white/yellow), three HDMI inputs, a PC input, an iPod dock with connector cable and rear input, an SD camera card input, and a Dolby digital audio output.

Bought this TV for the bedroom. It has a fantastic picture and great sound quality. One great feature is the automatic picture adjustment based on the room ambient lighting, saves having to mess around with the picture when you flip on the side table lamp. Also the factory color presets actually support the intended display, example: cinema setting looks more like film.

The only thing this set doesn't have that I would have like is an IP/Ethernet port. Otherwise I am extremely happy. Plenty of HDMI ports too.

The Best Buy in High Definition TVs?, June 12, 2010

What a great buy this HDTV is. I paid $469.00 (including shipping) for this 2010 42" Panasonic Plasma.

I own a 58" 1080p Panasonic plasma which was top rated by CNET in 2008. In fact, CNET said it was the very best HDTV they had tested that year and awarded it Editors Choice

I see very little difference between this low priced 42" Panasonic and my $3000.00 top of the line 58" 1080p Panasonic.

For a number of reasons I'd suggest you consider purchasing a plasma TV and if you can live without some bells and whistles, I'd recommend you purchase this exact model.

1.) 720p versus 1080p: While this is a 720P HDTV - I don't feel it makes much difference compared to a 1080 set. While the public has focused their attention on the obvious numeric difference between 720 and 1080 and assumed the larger number was always better --- that --- in a practical sense --- is not always the case. With smaller TVs, the difference between 720p and 1080 can not be easily detected unless you sit on top of the TV. Professional reviewers, time after time, have said the very same thing. Because of public perception - 720p TVs are becoming a dying bred and offer a unique buying opportunity. 720p displays process 1080 signals without any problem just as a 1080 display processes 720p signals without any effort. People forget that most Xbox and Playstation games as well as ALL of the content on ABC, FOX, and ESPN are sent in 720p.

2.) Viewing angle - almost every LCD has a poorer picture when viewed off center. CNET, HD Guru, Displaymate, Consumer Reports, etc all note how picture quality deteriorates when an LCD is viewed from an angle. In some cases, just sitting one seat cushion away from the ideal sweet spot produces a much poorer picture on an LCD. Plasmas have never had a problem with off center viewing. No matter where you sit, you will see the same picture on a plasma.

3.) Motion: While this is another perimeter that has been given far too much importance in the specification wars - plasmas are inherently superior at displaying motion. LCDs at 120HZ or better are pretty good with motion but never the quite the equal of plasmas. What is interesting to note is that reviewers say it is not likely anyone can see the difference in every day viewing (as opposed to test patterns). The bottom line is that plasmas are better with motion handling but even the worst LCD will likely look fine to most non-sports viewers.

4.) Black levels. How black is black is the specification that plasma fans love to cite. The blacks of most plasmas are far darker than those of a typical LCD although local dimming LED/LCD sets are close if not equal. This C2 Panasonic is no exception and even in my bedroom, with all the lights out, the blacks are very, very dark indeed. Panasonics, in the past, have been criticized because black levels increase over time, but in general, the blacks remain darker than LCDs even after they have risen. Whether the 2010 Panasonics even exhibit this problem is an open ended question.

5.) Reflections: The C2 has a shiny glass screen behind which is a dark background. It reflects, fairly well, any bright objects which are opposite it. If you are viewing program material that is fairly dark in nature you'll be able to see those reflections. With brighter program material - these reflections won't be visible

6.) Brightness: Plasmas are not overly bright. If you plan on viewing your TV in any room with a fair amount of ambient light then a plasma HDTV is probably not the best choice.

I'd recommend an LCD if you are viewing your TV in a medium to bright room. LCDs are often brighter than plasmas. If you are worried about reflections then an LCD with a matte screen would be a wise choice. Unfortunately matte screens are becoming increasingly rare on LCDs and have never been available on plasmas.

While other Panasonics offer more bells and whistles and technically better performance, I really believe this model is the value leader in HDTVs - given its low price. If you are willing to spend about one dollars more then look at the S2 series of Panasonics (latest 1080p Panasonic panel, more inputs and according to the manufacturer - a better anti-reflective screen) or if you have even more money to spend - the G series. The VT25 series is the top of the line but prices start above $2,000.00

Highly recommended at or below $500.00. I'd recommend the S2 Panasonic at or about $600.00.

A Fantastic Television With a Few Shortcomings, July 4, 2010

I've spent the last 2 months researching my next television purchase. I'm one of those people that over-researches the pros and cons of any major purchase. I specifically set out at the beginning of my research to purchase a television for my finished basement. Since I can easily control ambient light pretty much any display technology was on the table - Plasma, LCD, LED-LCD, DLP, etc. I love the picture quality of DLP sets but ultimately decided to rule out that technology mainly because of the size (width) and the fact that I would eventually need to replace a bulb. I decided against traditional CCFL LCD displays too despite owning a Sharp Aquos LC46D84U. That essentially left me with LED-LCD and Plasma technology. After going back and forth I finally ended up deciding to go with Plasma. I think ultimately the deciding factors for me were the overall picture quality and cost.

I've been using my TC65S2 for about the last 2 weeks and I'm absolutely floored by the picture quality. I'm actually surprised at how much better the display looks than my Sharp Aquos. Black levels are incredibly detailed, inky-black that leaves my Aquos' display looking like it can only generate gray instead of a true black level. Out of the box the TV came on 'vivid' setting which makes colors impressively "pop" on-screen, however, it somewhat distorts flesh-tones and makes people appear a bit orange. I used my DVE HD Basics calibration disc and calibrated my TC65S2 myself. It's probably not as good as a professional calibration but I feel satisfied enough with the results.

The TV comes with additional pre-settings such as 'Cinema' and 'Game'. I've used both and I'm happy to say that the settings are actually useful. I use a PS3 for both gaming and watching Blu-ray movies. The cinema setting on BD movie playback tones down the overall brightness and gives movies a 'warm' color setting similar to movie theaters. The 'Game' setting is impressive too and maintains a good black level while increasing the overall color levels. I can honestly say that after playing God of War 3 on my Aquos and again on this set, it's like playing a different game. There are many areas in GoW3 that are extremely dark and I'm now noticing details that just weren't there with my Aquos. Everything looks cleaner, more detailed and colors are more accurate.

Aesthetically, Panasonic seems to trail Samsung, Sony and Sharp. While those companies have invested significantly in the looks over everything from their bezel to the remote, Panasonic maintains a cleaner and simpler look. Personally I don't have a problem with the subdued look - I'm more interested in the picture quality than anything else. That said the TV does have a pleasant piano-black glossy finish. That continues with the rather simple wedge-shaped stand that is included. The remote unfortunately leaves something to be desired. Perhaps most importantly it is not back-lit. Simple things like adjusting the volume in a dark room are easy due to the shape of the particular key, however, changing the input for example is not. I believe that the G-2x & VT Panasonic plasmas do offer a better & back-lit remote. After the first week or so I finally had the time to program my Harmony for my new TV and I won't miss the Panasonic remote at all.

The included television speakers are adequate but nothing impressive. Honestly, at 65" I think most folks that purchase a set like this are doing so for a home theater and have surround sound. I used the included speakers for about a day before I switched over to my home theater speakers.

Feature wise the S2 might be called "bare-bones" by some. Personally I was on the fence about getting a G25 or jumping up to the VT (3D) series. Ultimately though I think 2 things swayed me to the S2. First the size; I wanted to create a home theater setting and the G25 tops out at 54". Panasonic does make a 65" VT25 that is full-HD 3D, however, that set is around the $4000 dollar mark. With such limited 3D offerings currently on the market I just couldn't justify the price. Second, the extra bells and whistles in the more expensive sets like the G25 and VT series are nice though I'm not sure how often I'd watch YouTube videos or listen to Pandora radio on my TV. The Netflix integration is probably the best feature, however, I'm already getting that with my PS3. For someone looking for a TV with a great picture and not really interested in peripheral features, the S2 is the way to go!

Lastly, for those not aware Panasonic was recently in a bit of a scandal - at least as far as AV enthusiasts go - with their plasma sets. It seems that after varying degrees of usage Panasonic plasma TVs started losing their deep-black level. There is a lot of discussion on various AV sites about the severity of the issue but as noted by CNET's reviewing editors it does happen and it is an issue with the 2009 and earlier sets. For the S2, Panasonic is using a new Neo-PDP panel and it remains to be seen what will happen. This was an issue that nearly derailed my purchase of this set. However, after reading more into the issue and the fact that the change is gradual - not something that happens overnight - I felt like I could go ahead and make the purchase. I'll follow up in the months to come to this review and make comments as necessary. I'm hoping that with the 2010 sets Panasonic was able to mitigate the problem. Time will tell.

Other information:

- In the box this TV weighs in at 165lbs! The TV alone weighs 123lbs and 137lbs with the included stand. Be sure to have adequate help when setting up this TV! Fortunately Panasonic designed hand grips into the back of the set to make is somewhat less unwieldy.

- I've noticed that when using HDMI directly to my PS3 I can utilize some of the Viera-Link features. For example when I switch my television input to my PS3 it automatically powers on my PS3. Kind of a neat feature that I thought was only compatible with Panasonic products that are Viera-Link enabled.

- This features 3x HDMI inputs and 2x Component inputs. There are additional inputs for composite and SDHC. The S2 series lacks a lot of the additional inputs that you gain with the G2x or VT series like USB, ethernet, RS232C, PC, etc.

- For such a large plasma television, the S2 does not generate as much heat as I expected. Even after recently watching a long movie and then a World Cup soccer match the TV wasn't hot.

1080p HD Picture Quality: The picture presentation of the from the 50S2 is still very bright and with the improved black levels much improved. Black levels are deep and strong with an HD signal input through HDMI. While not the best we've seen lately, they lose the dark gray haziness that the S2 can display with a 480i signal. Color is plenty saturated and dark shadow detail remains excellent.

Picture Presentation from 480i signals: We always test every TV with a 480i resolution. It is a great test of a TVs upconversion and processing chip sets. The signal may be likened to what you would see with your normal digital cable or satellite signal.The TC-P50S2 series plasma contains the new an updated version of the NEO PDP (i.e. plasma screen) from Panasonic. This is the same screen used in some of the higher end Panasonic series which should make this model a good value if picture quality is your primary objective. We find the picture quality overall improved from the prior S1 series. The drives do a little better job of eliminating motion artifacts than the S1 series did. Color rendition is still with black levels being the primary progress area of the S2 series delivering more depth and solidity. As was the case on the S1 series, brightness is a strength of the these newer Panasonic plasma models.

Calibration Notes: Overall, calibration to D6500K was very easy with this TV. Though there are no white balance adjustments available on the menu without entering the service menu, the 50S2 calibrated so close to D65 from the start that it would have improved the TV inappreciably. We started our calibration from the custom setting in the Warm 2 color temperature position. The S2 series TV does not contain the THX picture setting option. Follow the following settings to calibrate to a nearly perfect D65. These picture settings are best viewed in a controlled light environment fairly dark room:

Black Level/Contrast: Black levels were an area that the S1 series needed a makeover on. They got it with this S2 series. These are not going to be the best black levels we see this year and we dont anticipate them coming close to some of the Samsung plasma black levels. However, Panasonic has brought black levels back into welcomed focus. Final ANSI contrast measurement was 1261:1 which is a nice improvement over last year but far from what we want. One of the TVs greatest strengths lies in its white brightness which measured an average luminance of 31.50. This result nears LCD TVs in brightness and points to Panasonic's desire to compete with LCD TVs in this area.

Dark Shadow Detail: Partly due to the high brightness of this plasma dark shadow detail is excellent. Panasonic plasma TVs have long been a favorite of ours in this important area.

Color Rendition/Color Accuracy: Color rendition is much more saturated with HD content. The TV excels with HD content and is much more subdued in presentation with lower signals. Colors can seem a little weak and hazy at times with lower end signals. I will give them the thumbs up on reality however.

Features: One of the key feature differences of the S2 series with the G20 series of plasma by Panasonic is the absense of The Viera Cast feature set, which enables online content via a web interface. As a result, there is also no Ethernet port. The included Viera Link feature allows the user to control other Viera link capable outboard equipment. Viera Image viewer is the Panasonic compatible technology which enables use of SD memory card viewing via the SD card slot.The S2 has discrete picture settings for each input as well as Panasonic's new "600 Hz" specification for blur reduction.

This TV is Energy Star compliant due to an energy saver feature option. Power consumption for the S2 has been reduced from the S1. This is one of the main feature differences aside from improved black levels. Panasonic started improving efficiency in their plasma TVs in 2007 and have improved it 400% with this S2 model. They are now close enough to LCDs in energy efficiency that is should not matter.

This pannasonic G25 is amazing. Clear, Crisp Picture. Colors are amazing, unlike an LCD. You never would know the difference unless you saw a plasma. Unfortunatly plasmas got a bad rap years ago and people shy away from them. This model (as do others including samsung) have built in image retention elimination devices. Follow the break in for the first 100 hours and you have nothing to worry about. The sound levels arent bad, you probably have a surround system anyways so it dont matter. This picture gets better and better as it breaks in. All store demos are pretty crappy and usually the plasmas are off to the side. If stores used a good setup and dialed in the sets its unbelievable how many they would sell, but most people drift to the big bright LCD or LED. This tv is bright and colors are unmatched. Hockey games and fast paced sports are crap on lcd, but on plasma when the hockey players stop, you can see every sliver of ice fly through the air. Plasmas are less money and better picture the an lcd, why buy an lcd? I looked at the samsung, however they have a realllly bad rep for buzzing. Get it, dial in your settings and you too will be blown away.

Time for an upgrade!, March 24, 2010

I have literally been following the prices of HDTV's for about a year now, and there is no better time for an upgrade! Samsung just released their new "C" series, and somehow they are remarkably less expensive than their pre-existing models! The majority of the websites are selling this HDTV for $800+, Amazon's lower-than-low price is less than the rest of the market. I purchased it here on Amazon, and received my HDTV in 5 days (could have been 4 days, but I had school all day). CEVA did the shipping for my HDTV, which I was wary at first because I have only dealt with UPS and Fedex. However, CEVA provided excellent customer service as they did contact me and I verbally specified a delivery time. Packaging was very efficient, and surprisingly light too!

For those who prefer using TV stands, you do have to assemble it on your own. Extremely easy to assemble though! All it took was 9 screws (already in the box) and I recommend using a power-screwdriver. Directions said it required two people, I did it solo! I was just eager to hook up my PS3 via HDMI cable and experience the wonderful world of 1080P.

Okay, now for the specifics and why this HDTV deserves a spot in your living room - As I mentioned before, right up to my purchase I extensively followed the quality and price of several HDTVs. The Samsungs 530, 550, 630, 650. The Samsung 630 is the best deal for your money, here's why: The 5 series is less expensive, but only offers refresh times of 60Hz as compared to the 630 which is 120Hz. This is a big difference, and means that your HDTV with 120Hz displays at least twice as many frames-per-second which makes movies, not only sports, very fluid and more realistic. Another difference is the response time, where as the 5 series has a 6ms response time, the 6 series has a 4ms response time. And if you are a gamer, a difference of 2ms can make a big difference. So why the Samsung 630 and not the 650? The only difference now is the contrast ratio. The 630 comes with a 80,000:1 contrast ratio which in my opinion, still creates an extraordinary depth to the display. TV contrast ratio's are starting to become stable around the 70,000 - 100,000 range (or much higher for LEDs). Whereas, 3 years ago the highest was around 10,000 but kept constantly rising. So this HDTV is very much future proof. Yes, the 650 has a higher contrast ratio, but is it worth the extra $200 something dollars?

All in all, if you're not worried about price, go all out and purchase a LED HDTV. But if you want to shop smart, this HDTV is the way to go.

TV is great for the type (LCD) and price. The picture is bright, good contrast, and very smooth. The menu/remote are very comfortable...overall the picture is very nice. Aesthetically, the TV looks great as well...no cheesy features or decorations. This is my first LG product and I'm very pleased with this set. Also added the wireless adapter ($70). The entire setup and interface are very intuitive. This is a kids TV and they had Netflix down in no time (even the 5 year old). My only wish would be a backlit remote control.

Only complaint at all is with shipping. It did not ship on time and there was no communication from the shipping company. Ultimately, I had to contact the shipper to make an appointment (was stated that they would contact me). Once I called them, they drove it over the next day (Saturday). All in all, still very pleased.

The LG 42LE5400 is my first flat-screen television, and I've only had it for a couple weeks now. So there are the caveats.

But to my eye, it's a beautiful machine -- with the power on or off. I'm the kind of person who wants the giant TV in my living room to look nice even when it's off; only Samsung sets can match this LG in the looks department. It's almost impossibly thin, and when powered off it's just a cool-looking black panel sitting on my entertainment center.

Turned on, it's amazing. I haven't noticed any blurring while watching sports or action, the colors are great, flesh tones look like flesh, and the blacks look more than adequate. I did have to fiddle with the settings some out of the box -- turned the backlighting way down, for example. But to me, the television's self-calibration system seems to work great.

The Internet apps are pretty good, if a little spare. The TV connects to Netflix, Vudu, YouTube and other Internet video using an Ethernet cable plugged into my wireless router. LG sells a separate wireless receiver that you can plug into the television to ditch the 10baseT. There are also a bunch of Yahoo! "widgets" that do things like tell you the weather and check stock prices. They seem relatively useless.

So: Five stars, for now. That could change depending on the television's durability; it's a new model, so it doesn't really have a track record.

This TV is absolutely stunning. I was actually waiting for the C9000 to come out, but that TV's price is way over the limit. I found out that this TV which is the next step down and actually has the exact same technology as the C9000 minus the touchscreen remote (which can be bought seperately) and the slim profile, not a big deal considering the TV already looks beautiful and is half the price or less then a C9000!

In all honesty, I think this TV has one of the nicest pictures I've ever seen. One example is the pin-point dimming, which has garnered a lot of criticsm and skeptisism. I have seen the production TV model live and I must tell you, I think it's better then local-dimming and I'll tell you why... Unless there is a new panel that is made to fix the local-dimming "halo affect", this is currently the only way to get outradgeous contrast levels without that problem. The pin-point dimming on this TV dramatically lowers the dark spots on the screen in certain area's without a halo affect and actually goes completely pitch black when watching movies with dark screens just like a local-dimming TV. I think this TV actually excels at the dimming part over a local-dimming TV because it creates supurb black levels without any halo affects. That's a huge deal for me. Next is the color accuracy of this panel, I think the whites and colors on this TV are probably better then I've ever seen. Sure Plasma's can sometimes have better color temperatures, but they will not pop out of the screen with ambience like this TV shows. This TV is sharp looking and beautiful and it displays wonderful 3D and High-definition like never before.

Last, but not least... this tv is LOADED with features, easily making it one of the most feature rich TV's there is on the market. It's completely wireless, has 4-hdmi conenctions, has internet applications and streaming capabilities and best yet, it does it well! I have done a lot of research and have compared this TV with it's newest competitors and this one is it. Don't just take my word for it, go see it for yourselves and you'll just see what I am talking about.

It was easy to set up and plays cable and DVD's beautifully.
Relatively compact size.

It has a very special feature for those that are hard of hearing: there is a sound setting called "clear voice".
It appears to raise the treble information relative to midrange and bass, and also, makes the distinctions between sounds much sharper. For those hard of hearing, who usually have good bass/midrange hearing but rolled off treble, this will be a revelation. No more annoying your neighbors because you have to blast the TV in order to understand the voices. Also the TV does seem to play closed captions about as well as it can.

My aunt is using closed captions on cable TV and standard DVD playback and it works great. We had trouble using CC on a new upscaling DVD player using HDMI but that turns out to be a problem with the HDMI specification; HDMI relies on the source to decode CC and put the words on the screen, whereas older cable formats and resolutions like composite carry the CC signal distinct from the picture to the TV for decoding. This appears to be a major step back but it's not the fault of the TV. If you Google "cc dvd hdmi" you will find a LOT of conversation on the net about this problem. No one seems to have a solution.

The picture on this TV was stunning right out of the box. After a few minor adjustments it was as close to perfect as I could imagine. It came with the SQ01 panel and it would be hard to differentiate the color depth and quality from some of the plasma sets I looked at. The TV is in a very bright room and the matte screen cuts out glare with no picture degradation. The viewing angle is very good, though we are never more than 25 to 30 degrees off center. The picture is very stable from channel to channel with no change in the back lighting that I can see, and the standard definition picture is almost HD quality when using the 16:9 picture format. It has separate settings for processing speed and anti-judder for motion blur when using the Custom view mode, unlike the majority of sets that combine both settings into one. I watch a lot of sports and really don't notice motion blur at 60hz so its certainly not an issue at 120hz. I'm not a gamer, so for my viewing habits I see no need to spend more for a 240hz option. The sound is very good for normal TV viewing. It can be connected to a home network and I have also hooked it up to my laptop using the VGA connection to watch Netflix and even that produces an acceptable SD picture. There are multiple picture settings you can use to suit just about any programming source, including watching at 120hz without the "soap opera" effect that some people find so annoying. There are 4 HDMI and 2 USB connections, plus one for headphones. There is no S video so you may need cables to hook up older external equipment. UVerse is the programming source.

One thing about settings. The first evening the picture suddenly got much darker and even though I would reset the brightness, it would get dark again once I left the menu. I spoke with Samsung and they had no idea why this was happening. It turns out this set automatically adjusts the picture to your room brightness in the Standard viewing mode, which is the factory default. You can change this in the Eco portion of the picture menu to never go below a certain brightness level or you can turn it off completely. This is not an issue when using any other viewing mode.

The last time I bought a LCD I continued to look around in case I found something better. That will not be the case this time as I am completely satisfied. Pilot shipping through Amazon was great. They delivered on time, set up the TV and swivel stand, and had everything working in 5-10 minutes.

First off I want to be clear about the kind of review this is intended to be. I am not a profession TV rater. I am not a videophile. I am a regular Joe and I am reviewing this for the regular Joe who is thinking about spending more than usual on a good quality television. During the next few months, I'm sure you can find a more professional review from the usual places... But for now, this is my impressions.

CORNER LIGHT: After reading many reviews on last years B8000 and this year's C7000, I was worried about the light that emits from the corners. I've seen displays of last year's B8000 and this year's C7000 and have VERY easily seen what people are talking about. I took a big gamble in purchasing this TV before I read if people were having issues with this C8000. So let me say... After watching this TV for about 5 hours per day for 3 days... I have NOT seen the light coming from the edges as seen on other sets. And believe me I've been looking. I tried to find it watching the HD feed on Time Warner Cable, Blu-ray's from the PS3, Blu-Ray's from the Samsung 3D Blu-Ray player, watching at night, during the day... Nothing. I just do not see it!

LOOKS: This TV looks just amazing. It has a VERY dark black screen. It looks as beautiful turned off as it does on. I was nervous about the brush metal look, but it actually looks very nice and compliments the new chromed four-legged stand.

PICTURE: The picture clarity looks incredible. It's as if I'm discovering HD for the first time. This set replaces a Samsung DLP set, so of course this is a vast improvement. Having said that, I have a newer plasma in the bedroom and this set looks much better than that. As with all new LED sets with 240 Hz, there is a bit of the Spanish Soap Opera/Home Video look to it. Some people really like this, some people don't. I really like it. For those of you that don't, you can always turn this feature down or off. To me this makes the picture look very clear and it makes it stand out from the other sets.

3D: Along with this TV I purchased the Samsung 3D Bluray player so I can get the 3D startup kit for free. Turning the 3D feature on and connecting the glasses was easy. The intro to Monsters v. Aliens was very cool. The opening scene in outer space looked incredible. The ball tied to a paddle part was funny and kinda made me jump a little. I haven't spent too much time with 3D but I did notice that there were some scenes in the movie that had a double image while wearing the glasses. It doesn't happen a lot, but it is noticeable. You can see this right away during the church scene at the beginning of the movie. It was a little annoying. I'm hoping that this is the kind of stuff that gets ironed out with a firmwear update, or as more content is released, they learn to fix it.

OnlineTV: This is also a very new area for me. I never understood the need for me to want apps on my TV... But its actually kina cool. I've tried a few apps but my favorite by far is the Pandora app. I'm a big fan of Pandora and this app I actually like better on my TV than online or the iPhone. The only thing I hate is that Samsung did not have Wifi built in. I think pricing this set at the $3000+ mark should be enough to include it with the set and not require me to drop another $80 for the USB adapter. I just hardwired it, but that's another wire I don't like dealing with.

USB: I wanted to mention that this set allows you to connect a USB external hard drive and play music, photo's and movies directly from the HDD. I have a Western Digital 320GB Passport filled with movies and music, and I was able to navigate the files structure in the drive using the remote quite easily. And it played all the files formats I threw at it.

Pros:
No corner light!!!
Very dark screen.
Very clear picture
Pandora Samsung App
3D was surprisingly fun
USB external HDD capable
and... NO CORNER LIGHT!

Cons:
Slight double images on 3D.
Wifi requires an $80 USB adaptor.

Overall I am very satisfied with the UN55C8000. Even with the few CONS, this set to this average Joe is a definite 5 star! As I spend more time with the set, I'll be sure to update this review if I find something worth mentioning.

I looked at this set and the TC-P65V10 in Best Buy before I purchased it here. Using the same input I could not tell more that a tiny marginal difference in the V10's 96hz 24p feature and this set without. I also looked at the 60" KURO and while it did look better calibrated, it was not worth the more than "double the price" premium. I could tell a difference in the price though and back in my in home all I can say is, "WOW what a picture". This performance available at this Amazon price point is the value of the year in television IMHO.

I bought the new TC-P54G10 in early September and also have a 720P 50" TH-50PX80U model. While the TC-P65S1 Panasonic does not have THX, I was not as impressed with the THX settings as I thought I would be and prefer to use the custom settings. In my opinion this is still by far the best picture of the three sets I own. It shares the same Neo-PDP glass as the 54G10 but at 65" the 1080 ability really shows through. Even at the 54" size I cannot tell the difference with the 720 sets but this 65S1 shines like a star. I watched the Thursday night college football game on ESPNHD and spent more time being amazed at the picture than at the game and it was a darn good game.

This set is in a big room, 19' x 26', 12" ceiling with lots of glass windows behind it and sliding doors. The anti glare works well, really great.
They need to add the ability to use Netflix right from the set and add more picture control ability for fine tuning and calibration of the picture.

Panasonic really knows their stuff. I can't wait until they come out with a 100" or better Plasma that folks who are not a Rap-Star can afford.

Startling clarity, detail, and color, May 31, 2009

Had my Samsung UN55B8000 TV a couple of weeks now. It has more than lived up to the hype. Hooked it up and put on a blu-ray disk. Even the delivery guy's jaw dropped, and he's delivered/set up hundreds of TVs.

TV is only inch and half thick and only weighs 60 pounds or so.

In fact, it is sometimes almost too good. When viewing people on HD you can see every little mole, scar, wrinkle, stray hair, makeup, five o'clock shadow, makeup line, etc. I'm sitting here watching the news and I can clearly see tiny pieces of lint on the guy's black suit. I'm guessing the talking heads of tomorrow are all going to have to have much better complexions.

If you like to tweak your TV this one provides a lot of different controls. There are already some websites that will give you what they consider good tweaks to maximize the pic. You can also look for the B7000 tweaks. Looks pretty darn fantastic right out of the box so if you aren't a techie, don't worry about it.

Sounds..not particularly good or bad, but I don't want TV speakers taking up space anyway. If you are going to spend this kind of money for a TV you should be using your stereo system.

Some reviewers were complaining about the number of inputs. Again, how many is enough. I run my PS3, XBOX360, IPOD, and the Dish box through my Denon and so I only use one HDMI.

You can plug it into the internet. No set-up, just plug it in. First thing it did was download 12 updates to itself. Have no idea what they did but ...didn't cause any problems. It automatically loads up some of Yahoo's widgets. Fun to try but...not something I have really gone back and used much. Also has some built in content...recipes, artwork, etc. that I haven't bothered to look at.

You can plug in USB drives and view content directly off the drive.

I long ago got rid of my roof antenna. I bought a little Turk indoor antenna and plugged that in so I can pop over into over-the-air signals and watch TV. It will automatically search and find the on-air channels. It even downloads some kind of TV guide from the internet for the channels it finds.

I also wanted to see if there was any signal degradation from Dish. I haven't noticed the HD degradation with Dish that I had with Comcast. The way Comcast packed the HD signals you could see a real difference between OTA and the packed pics.

Samsung also provides software which allows you to use your PC as a server. Then you can display your pics, music, etc on the TV. Took a little playing around but was easy compared to some of the others I've tried to use.

I've played games with both my PS3 and the XBOX360. No problems. No pixelating. Did not bother to change TV over to game mode. I haven't fooled around with the 240Hz function. I just leave it on standard.

I'm sure there are other features I haven't tried. With the ability to update itself over the internet I have no doubt they will teach it even more amazing tricks.

I've set up my Harmony 880 Pro to control all my devices including the IPOD. IPOD menu/info will display (through my Denon) on the TV.

All of the above features are great but the main thing is... the picture is just absolutely mind-blowing wonderful.

So, fantastic TV. I am VERY happy with it. Obviously I highly recommend it.

While walking the long island of small HDTV's... One things immediately stood-out about this Panasonic T.V.
Compared to all the other T.V's (that were in a long row)... we noticed when we stood at a "angle", the Panasonic picture remained crisp and sharp. The majority of other 32" HDTV's were "washed-out" at an angle.
99.5% of all other "exact sized" HDTV's... became out of focus or "dim".... when viewed at an angle.

This is very important (to my husband and I), because this Panasonic HDTV... will always.... have people viewing it at angle. (No couch or chair will be directly in front of this T.V.)

We saw this Panasonic model in "Three stores". Hands-down, this 32" Panasonic HDTV had the sharpest pictures and best, "true-color" ... compared to all the other 32" HDTV's. in it's class.

The LG 32LH30 32-Inch 1080p replaced a 720p 32 inch Samsung which I returned because of erratic sound quality. The LG provides a very clear picture for upscaled DVD movies and over the air digital signals. The speakers provide excellent sound for a small living room although the addition of a home theater system would substantially increase movie enjoyment. Standard definition signals also reproduce a stable clear picture. Colors are very good and the set provides sufficient tools to tweak the picture for personal preference. I have not used it for bluray as yet but HD from satellite is very good. The features of this unit described on the Amazon specifications list accurately describe its features and can be relied upon. I am not a hard core cinema/video buff but I cannot imagine that this unit will not satisfy most viewers who want a well priced midsized flat screen high definition TV. My five stars are based upon what I expect in similarly designed and priced units for a smaller room.

First off, I should note that CNET is way too critical with their reviews and I'm so glad I went to look at this tv at bestbuy instead of just trusting their review. I don't think you could find a better tv for only 1140.00

To begin, the off angle is just fine and unless you have a living room wider than 15" and viewing from only 6" back, you'll be fine.

The remote that comes with the tv is so wonderfully simple that I'd trust my mother to use it. 2 simple buttons sum up this ease of use (input, and avmode). The buttons are not only labled well, but the resulting popups make it very clear what you're doing.

Hooking up the tv was incredible. The inputs are very easy to reach without moving the tv sideways. Aside from that, the available side inputs are also easy to plug in.

One feature I wish the tv had was avi/mp4 playback. Though it has usb functionality, the tv is only capable of loading images and (music? cant recall)
--- This should not deter you since the super low price makes buying a Play Station 3 with this TV a great option and one that I chose to do, especially since adding the PS3 means you can play video from usb, get wireless onto the tv, and stream shared files from your computer, in all, a major win, especially since the two combined keeps the price under the midrange samsung w/ internet plus you get the added blueray and upscaling bonus.

As far as picture quality goes, I have had the chance to watch HDTV, DVD, BLURAY, and PS3 games at 720 and 1080. The results of this viewing made me feel very good about my purchase. Though I'm sure the PS3's ability to upscale played a part in DVD looking superb, I have to say that Tony Soprano looked like he was in the livingroom. I also watched Princess Mononoke which has a lot of fog/type scenes (lots of greys swirling) and to my pleasant surprise, no noise, artifacting, nothing. I got off the couch and stood 4 inches from the TV and couldn't believe the picture was that good for only 1100.

Gaming is excellent. I really like the game mode (and I do recommend pressing the AV-Mode button and utilizing the feature). I tried out MGS4, Killzone 2, Ratchet and Clank, and Lego Starwars. The colors though not as vibrant as perhaps the 2700 dollar samsung, were none the less incredible and vibrant.

The sound on the tv is great and LOUD. I keep it at 14-20 (the tv goes up to 100)!!
Even still, I decided to take advantage of my surround sound, and purchased a 4.50 optical audio cable off Amazon to hook up my stereo.

Some other thoughts:

The tv is crazy light, I set it up myself (it really is only 37 lbs) so if you can pick up a 2yr old, you can pick this thing up.

The tv has a nice cable management feature, but I don't use it since I only have 3 cords going into my tv (HDMI from cable box, HDMI from PS3, Optical audio out to surround sound), ya, it's that awesome.

In short, buy the tv. You really can't go wrong.

3D Peering into Look - Terrific PQ Details and Blacks, June 13, 2009

Received our 40" Z5100 one week ago via Onecall Amazon Sale - double boxed via Fedex tracking/timeliness. Extremely happy with the results. I own four LCD TV's and a long term member of AVSForum.

Was able to replace a 32" Sharp with side speakers and gain 8" viewing for my wife's primary viewing in the Master Bedroom Armoire and while I was torn between it and the B750 it's a damn good thing I went with the Sony as I found the Samsung would not have fit the space.

To my surprise when I set everything up was how reflective the Sony was while off - not full matte like my Sharps but that has no impact when the TV is turned on at all. Damn the TV is black and semi-reflective Off but a beauty when displaying.

No gaming is done on this TV and so I won't report on anything in that regards and I won't assist with calibrations since my viewing preference is a vivid panel.

I decided on this panel after studying panels for the past 6 months and finally viewing the XBR9 and the Z5100 next to Samsung B750/B650 panels. As great as the Samsungs were I was unable to get that peering into PQ DEPTH that I experienced on the new Sony panels - plus I feared the wife may complain about reflections on the Samsungs after having none for 4.5 yrs on the Sharp. I was repeatedly impressed with this immersiveness on these two new Sony panels as I am in my Home.

I popped in Mamma Mia Blu-Ray and it was fantastic - the Mediterranean Sea color and clarity was eye popping and I turned on AMP and when you haven't experienced it before it's sort of strange to have that Live Camera view and soap opera look - I prefer the theater look but it's nice to play with but something one can use according to their preference.

The blacks on this are wonderful trumping the 4.5 yr old it replaced easily.

I spent hours going from the bedroom to my main 57" 3.5 year old Sharp and I used Food Network HD to cross compare since they constantly zoom into the cooking experience and it's easy to see PQ details on that channel. Again my in-store HD Viewing with 3D depth peering into of the Sony trumped my 3.5 yr Technology on my Sharp easily. The friggin clarity on HD on these cook-off's was simply amazing on the Sony and it tells me Sony may have a kick butt 65" when it debuts with BE3 on the W5100 in August. My Sharp had a flatter smoother look - still looked great and the 57" size delivers alot of WoW but the details on the Z5100 was stunning. The Z5100 and XBR9 are the first LCD's I've seen that could match or exceed the PQ details of the SXRD I owned previous with HD.

Also, I carefully watched for flashlighting and clouds and saw ZERO - simply BLACK - BLACK - BLACK!

The only negative I can report is Turdvision SD - it is what it is - a TURD!

I'm used to viewing HD 90+% of the time and so I'll always tolerate it for my channels that have not transitioned yet but I don't buy my TV's for SD - after all some SD channels can look quite good while others are crapola no matter the panel especially after growing accustomed to HD at six times the PQ.

The irony is that I'll rarely view this TV regularly as my wife and I have very different tastes and I have a sleep disorder where I only view the Sony occasionally after setting it up but it gave me a yardstick to make a move to a 65" > in the future with it's PQ Depth, Details, and Black Levels and hopefully I can provide her this larger 40" panel in the same space a 32" would only fit with First Rate PQ for 8+ years and she's quite happy and takes away the guilt when I jump to a 65" as she'll have the Z5100 for regular viewing and then the BIG HT 65" or my 57" for HT immersion as size does have it's benefits to get HT immersion with Blu-Rays especially.

IMO Ten/Ten Panel Processing, BE3, 240Hz, and the 100K:1 CR and the maturity of Sony Bravia Series is now returning rewards in the "Z5100" and XBR9. Enjoy!:D

ALSO --- Most importantly with the achilles Heal of LCD --- I see no Friggin HAZE!!! The Samsungs (B750/B650) are still outstanding IMO also but if you cannot handle the reflective nature and ambient lighting issues a viewing room may interfere with PQ these Sony panels trump the Samsungs IMO and with a little patience the prices should drop also.

Extremely Happy and look forward to the Sony 65" W5100 in August!!! :)

I'm watching baseball on the LN40B530 as I write this, and am blown away by the crisp picture and wonderful colors. The sound is fine as far as my family is concerned. I did make some adjustments to the equalizer, which improved how it sounded right out of the box. I walked past the "tv wall" at a local Best Buy, and to me this TV looked as good as the ones in the $2,000-and-up range. As far as its being "only" 60hz, it looked better than some of the 120hz ones. Maybe if you're a heavy gamer that's an important consideration, but nobody here is. Our previous TV was a Hitachi plasma EDTV that we thought was great, but this is a big improvement. Can't wait to see a blue-ray disc on it. I wonder if the previous reviewer had a defective one. None of their complaints are true of this unit at all.

If you are, like I was, looking for a 40"-42" flat screen television for a secondary room (bedroom/den) then this Toshiba is worthy of consideration. The picture quality is very good, its digital tuner is sensitive (ie, brings in lots of stations), and its priced very competitively. My only complaints are:

- you will need to fiddle plenty with the color controls to get something that looks decent. Out of the box I found flesh tones looked very orange-y.
- the audio is fairly weak. Hooking the system up to a stereo/av receiver is almost a necessity.

So when price is considered this Toshiba unit is very good. Take price out of the equation and it is only fair/good. Buying this for a secondary room makes perfect sense.

1. Awesome picture quality
2. Easy to setup - walks you through a series of pictures with different brightness and contrast and asks you to select between two pics (left right) - Also different default picture modes are useful at times.
3. Awesome Sound - one of my friend actually asked me if I had some additional speakers / woofer connected while watching a movie.
4. 120Hz and 2ms response at this cost is unbeatable
5. Looks beautiful
6. Easy to setup with HD antenna

Cons:
Does not have a VGA input but I knew this before purchasing it. I use S-video on my laptop to connect to the TV

This LCD is the best of both size and quality. With the additional 300 off that amazon was offering a couple of weeks ago, it was a bargain for what you get. Samsung is top quality in my opinion right now.

Here is the good:

Great picture. 3 extra inches worth more to me than 240 hz
Glass screen makes picture more vivid and handles glare with ease.
Touch of color makes it look really nice hanging in my living room.

Could be better:
Sound is average at best. Most will hook it up to external speakers so it doesn't matter that much
Remote is decent but needs more quick buttons to control PIP and other tools that you have to navigate through a couple of menus to change

Bad:
Nothing. You will not be dissapointed with this bad boy!

Great TV for the money, April 13, 2009

This is my first HDTV. I bought it because my brother-in-law has the previous model, which is pretty much the same. He loves it for the bedroom because it's light and just all around a great TV.

Cable broadcasts in 720p/1080i. So unless you have the room and money for a larger screen, have a Blu-Ray DVD player or are a serious gamer, go with the 720P and save yourself some bread.

I'm very happy with the sound and picture. I do not have this hooked up to a home theater. There are plenty of inputs, so it should work well for your system. I tried my JVC HD camcorder and it was simple to connect and view.

I was undecided between this 2009 model and last year's LN40A550.
The features are substantially identical, but after figuring that the difference between best prices for the two, which I could find after extensive shopping around, was only $50, I went for newer one for its updated look and lighter weight.
In the reviews, one of the principal complaints for 2008 was the sound quality. I can't directly compare 2009 and 2008, but found 2009's LN40B550 to have perfectly adequate, if not excellent speakers, as far as TVs go.
Picture quality, menus, setup are excellent as expected.
One aspect that I did find puzzling is Wiselink not being able to recognize my old trustworthy USB Flash Drive. I even tried formatting the drive in various ways, unfortunately none of the tricks worked.
Perhaps, it's the ancient drive not being comparable in some way, but it had never let me down before. Anyhow, I ordered a few different flash drives, and will try again, and then post an update.

Tried four various flash drives, all of them work just fine in computers, all four freshly formatted same way (FAT32). Two of the drives are read by the TV with no problems, the two others are not recognized at all... Go figure... The slideshow functionality is nice, quite limited, but does the job.

Just for the reference, one of the drives that does work in this TV is Kingston Data Traveler 4GB.

My original review of the TV was negative due to a problem of dimming during dark scenes. But few days ago Sony released a software patch to correct the problem and it worked for me. Now, the auto dimming can be turned off by setting the "Adv. Contrast Enhancer" to Off. Also, even when it's turned On, it doesn't behave like it did pre- patch, it now dims gradually rather than abruptly and it doesn't dim as much as it did before. Thank you very much Sony, I'm updating my rating to 5-star.

I'm very happy with the TV now that the auto dim is fixed. If you own the TV and having problems with the dimming, go to the support section of Sony's site to download the patch and the instructions on how to apply it. You will need a USB thumb drive formatted in FAT32, but if you don't have it, Sony will mail you one if you call their customer support.

I'm happy to be the first to rate this wonderful LCD. I'll be short and to the point, and maybe come back and supplement this review after a few more weeks of use.

Aesthetically, the TV is clean and elegant. Love the touch of red. Love the crystal base. Love the fact that it swivels. It's a beautiful piece of equipment, and looks a good bit more modern than the more curvilinear A model. I'm very happy I waited for this one.

Set up was a snap. Took me about 2 minutes to connect the base. It took longer to remove the stickers. The manual is on a little USB drive that plugs in the side of the TV, but I haven't bothered with it yet.

The picture is stunning, right out of the box. Absolutely beautiful. Only adjustment I made was to turn the brightness down slightly, as I have a very dark TV room.

The on-screen graphics and menus are both intuitive and elegantly designed. I hate when the industrial design is carefully considered, and the on-screen UI is forgotten. That didn't happen here. Both are wonderful.

I somewhat skeptically connected my camera card reader to one of the USB plugs on the side, and inserted a memory card from my father's camera. He'd hoped to show us pictures, but didn't have a plan for how. Perfect timing, as the TV had arrived that day. The TV recognized the card, and very quickly we were watching pictures and video in high res on our new TV. Fantastic.

Less than perfect: the sound. Actually, it's a bit of joke. But, that doesn't effect my rating because I don't feel that the internal speakers are really meant to be used w/ a TV like this. I'm using a 5 channel surround system, but before I hooked it up, I heard the speakers. It makes sense that they wouldn't sound good since you can't even see them.

Also less than perfect was the delivery process via this company, CEVA/Eagle. Note that they claimed to have contacted me via email to set up delivery, but I never rec'd anything. They didn't call. So, I had to google them and call them. Plan for this! Stay on top of them. The driver called me no less than 4 times during the day, each time making up some goofy excuse for being even later. I think he was watching the NCAA tournament at a bar somewhere. But, in the end, it arrived 1 day late, and in perfect condition. So, I don't care. And, I can't take away a star from the TV due to the delivery service. I just think Amazon needs to communicate the process better with it's customers and make sure that CEVA does a better job too.

Anyway, Amazon's price is great, the TV is fabulous. Enjoy!

Expanded Review:
First, I defined my goals: From about 8 feet away I want to watch High Definition DVD's at 1080p, watch High Definition television including local channels, connect some gaming consoles, connect a PC, and connect my surround sound receiver.

I looked at different products for a year. I would compare the appearance between the different sets in the store, read online reviews, talked to friends, and read product specifications.

I decided on the following and intended to act before the end of summer: I would obtain a decent 42" LCD with all of the necessary connectors for under $1600, I would purchase a PS3 for Blu-ray as well as HD gaming with the bonus that it will upconvert my current DVD's, and upgrade my current cable service to HD for HD television viewing. I figured to spend about $2000-$2200.

When the PS3 price dropped to $500 it figured it was time to move. The contenders after my research included the Samsung, Sony, LG, and the Westinghouse LVM-42W2. Most were over the limit to what I was comfortable spending so it came down to the LVM-42w2. When I went to find it I discovered the TX-42F430S that had been recently introduced. Additionally it was available at a local yellow tagged electronics superstore for the best price advertised. I was able to view this unit side by side with the other available LCD's and it looked just as good, to me, as much more expensive models. I realized however that the signal being pumped into those devices on the wall was not a 1080p signal and that the picture at home might look different. At that point I figured it was bright, the colors were coming through, the menu system was functional, and it was the lowest priced 42" 1080p LCD available ($1299). I bought it with a matching of the online deal that threw in a Sony HT-DDW790 home theater system and a 60 day in house price match. The following Sunday 7/29 it went on sale for $1099. I got the price match ($200 back) and sold the HT system for $120. So, total for this system with PS3 was right about $1500 plus cables, controllers, Blu-ray Planet Earth, and a couple of games for the PS3. I feel good.

Results:
1. I have the PS3 connected to one of the four(!) HDMI connectors and it looks awesome. Motorstorm at 720p is excellent and Planet Earth at 1080p is unbelievable. I had to get the blue tooth remote for playing movies, you can do it with the controller but it's a pain. Most of the upconverted DVD's look incredible, much better than on standard def TV, this was much better than I expected and for someone not hypersensitive it would be hard to differentiate it from some native HD or Blu-ray DVD's.

2. HD Digital Cable content through the component connection looks very good. Standard Definition looks like garbage, but this is expected of all HD LCD's, the pixels on the LCD display the picture in all it's ugly glory. In all my research, I have not come across a way to watch standard def TV and it not look bad. It's functional, and viewable if you don't expand the screen and let it display in 4:3, but a step down when viewing most of the normal TV content. One can only hope that more and more channels come to HD format.

3. I have my PC, Wii, and PS2 (only for guitar hero) hooked up though the home theater receiver via S-video at the moment and it serves. I want to move the PC to the VGA connector (I need a new dual head video card), the Wii to the component connection, and the PS2 directly to the S-video in the future.

4. I have a digital optical cable running from the output on the LCD to the HT receiver and it sounds good. The interal LCD speakers can be turned off so that only the HT system is used.

So, I am very happy. I hope this helps some of you still looking. I relied heavily on comments about the products here and I wanted to return the favor.

I purchased this TV one month ago. It is a replacement for my XBR4 which is being enjoyed in its new home. Shopping and looking, then I saw it. It was love at first sight. And it is a sight to behold. Crystal clear, vibrant realistic colors, and a beautiful design. Sony has outdone itself with a new benchmark for the industry. You will not be disappointed with this beauty. This is TV as it has never been. Coupled with my FIOS HD service and a blu-ray player there's little reason to ever attend a movie theater. Although my Bose surround system is the perfect mate to this TV, the eight built-in speakers leave little to be desired. Check it out, you'll see TV like never before.

Good device for good price, April 3, 2009

I just received this television. My first impression is great. I've been investigating diffrent brands and different models of LCD TV's for a while. Here is the conclusion I reached and the reasons for purchasing this TV:

* Sony has great models for over $2500. They have great picture but not great enough to compensate for the couple of thousand extra dollars paid. I saw 46XBR6 and 46V5100 next to each other in BB and did not see a significant difference except the price.
* Samsungs have great LCD TVs. But glossy screen would not work for me at all. I have a bright living room where my TV is located. So, if you will have your TV in a bright room, you probably would like to avoid glossy screens like Samsung has. It really reflects a lot almost like a mirror. This was a big deal for me.

Now, my experice with KDL46V5100 is as follows:
It has great picture quality. I did not expect it to be so good at even SD. It is very easy to use. We plugged the TV and started to use it right away. Even user's manual is just a few pages. Before buying the TV I paid extra attention to the wide angle performance. This TV has about the same view from front and from sides: no changes in color or image quality with angle that I recognized.

I am extremely satisfied with the Amazon delivery. They brought the TV, unpacked it and installed the TV on the stand.

Amazing TV, May 6, 2009

I recently purchased this TV from Amazon and have been using it for about a week now. The picture is gorgeous out of my PC to the TV using a DVI to HDMI converter. Playing DVDs at 1080p is an amazing experience for me who is stepping up from a 27inch 720p set. There are loads of inputs to connect all your old equipment like a PS2 etc. You can send the audio out of the TV to your receiver using a single optical cable and this makes the clutter much less behind the receiver. The auto highlighting of the active inputs present on the TV makes it easy to know if the equipment you have connected is working or not.

The touch of color is an ok feature..just makes the TV look good and most of the times you need good lighting behind the TV to actually see the red color on the edges.

Is 120Hz worth it? Well right now it is not for the extra 200-300$ per set. I was thinking of getting the Sony Bravia with 120HZ but when I viewed the screen between these two i could not tell the difference.
Films and games mostly are shot/produced at 24-30 frames/sec...since this set has twice the sampling 60hz you should expect a pretty smooth frame rate and should not have any motion lag. 120hz samples at 4 times and will make it look even smoother..but you would need a giant screen to note the difference. at this size it is marginal so save your money and go with this Gem from Samsung.

A Wow Item - Just Terrific, June 29, 2009

Just received this last week. Of course, Amazon beat any other pricing by a wide margin - by at least $500 for the cheapest store bought price (on sale) and I even checked some stores on a walk in and they were charging $1,000 above the Amazon price or more. Delivery was free and could not wait to get this set out of the box. I researched a great many LCD's before picking this one. I wanted the very latest technology to ward off obsolesence, at the best price I could find, and am not disappointed one bit by this set. Easy set up, and just with the building's digital antenna, the picture is absolutely outstanding. There are many presets, but with a bit of tweaking, as it appears with most LCDs, you get a terrific picture. You can customize each preset if you wish. Setting adjustments are intuitive and the screen navigation is very easy. Sound is pretty decent as well, although I already have it hooked into my AV. I have already watched sports, television and DVDs and all have been as crisp, vibrant, without drag or latency, as I have ever seen on an LCD this size. The contrast ratio is just unreal and my eyes are still getting used to it. Plenty of input/output options including plenty of HDMI and even ethernet and PC connections. Having Fios HD installed this week and can't wait to see how it looks. So far, am very satisfied and would definitely recommend at the price.

There are lots of in-depth reviews of this TV on the web, so I won't go in to too much detail here. I will say that the picture quality is awesome on this model, and that I'm very happy with my purchase. The red touch of color isn't too obvious (I still wish Samsung would abandon the TOC though). The swivel base is nice, too.

The "auto-motion plus" (AMP) feature is improved over the 2008 model by allowing you to fine-tune the settings more. AMP is the technology that fills in extra frames (120Hz) so video doesn't look so "jerky". Owners of the 2008 model sometimes had complaints that they could not adjust the AMP setting enough to their liking. The 2009 model allows greater customization.

"Game mode" helps eliminate the lag when playing games. Once I turned this mode on, there was no lag when playing "Rock Band" and other games on the PS3.

I am using HDMI v1.3b cables that only cost a dollar from BargainCell. Images are awesome. Don't spend more than that for HDMI cables!!! Research the web or look at the reviews for HDMI cables on Amazon to find out why. You will not notice any difference in image quality no matter how expensive an HDMI cable is.

The sound on the TV is a little flat, and doesn't have much bass. But I am hooking my PS3 and DirecTV sound to an Onkyo receiver and Energy speakers (which sound great!), so it didn't matter to me.

Keep in mind that the 650 models (like this one) have a gloss panel. This causes reflections to show from windows and lights. If you're looking for the semi-matte screens that help cut down on this, you'll want to check out the 630 models.

My TV was shipped via Pilot freight services. They made a courtesy call to me stating that because of where I live, that one of their partners (a moving company) would be making the delivery. As a result, it tacked on a few extra days for the product to arrive, but it arrived in perfect condition and the moving company set up the TV and made sure it worked and that I was happy with it before they left.

All-in-all, I'm definitely pleased with this TV.

Great TV, bad quality control from Samsung, May 5, 2009

Let me say that this TV is one of the best in the market for the price point. The pros are too many to list and so far has been a great choice as far as features and performance. I'm an early adapter for HDTV in 03 going from a Zenith C32V37 RP CRT (4:3); which unfortunately is getting replaced due to a humming power supply. The B750 can match the black levels of the RP CRT and has no clouding or flashlighting that I was seeing on the A750/A850 sets, which my wife and I almost decided to get. With Amazon's pricepoints coming very close to the discounted price of the previous generation Samsung sets it was a no brainer.

Now onto the Cons, I would have given this B750 5 stars if not for the crappy Samsung Quality Control. I received my TV out-of-the-box with a remote that had 5 dead/non-working buttons= mute, up arrow, play, red options button and "1". Also, after 2 days of setting up the TV and getting all our inputs connected using almost all of them (analog & digital); yes even both USB ports, the HDMI inputs 1-3 stopped working properly. Now, those inputs will only take the signal from the HDMI 4. EG: If I select HDMI 1-3 and have a source such as Bluray running on the HDMI 4 (side-port) it will display that source signal. Talk about disappointing QC. After a few calls to Amazon and Samsung; I will be getting a new remote and have Samsung's local service technician out to fix the HDMI input problem. I can't believe these QC issues out-of-the-box are occuring for such as middle-tier to higher end line of prodcut; very poor testing on Samsung's part.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the performance of the B750 but very disappointed with their QC process which can be greatly improved. In my 20-30+ years of owning electronic equipment I have never encountered these types of QC problems out-of-the box with any products.

I wanted a 52 inch TV. My home entertainment center is 33' tall. The Samsung and Sony are 34' tall. The Mitsubishi is only 31.5' with the stand, so it fits in great. It has a really small bezel, so almost the entire TV is screen. There isn't a lot of wasted space around the edges. The picture on the TV is really good. The TV was really easy to set up and I was watching HD TV in less than 10 minutes. It did not come with an hdmi cable. You need one to connect the TV to the DVR/cable box. I compared this TV to the comparable Sony and Samsung and the picture quality was almost the exact same. The guy at Fry's tried to point out settle differences, but they were almost impossible to notice even when the TV's were right next to each other. If you buy the TV on Amazon you get free shipping and no tax and it make it the best price compared to any retail store or online retailer.

I purchased my TV from Costco for [...] a few weeks ago.

I spent extensive time researching the different types of flat screen tvs and the pros and cons of each.

Currently, I feel the rear projection televisions are the best for the cost.

Here is a brief explanation why:
1. Near impossible to get burn in. You can, but you almost have to try to make it happen. I have only read of one review where the fella actually ran his at 4:3 constantly. Of course you are going to get some type of burn in on the left and right hand sides of the picture.
2. Picture quality is very good. I have noticed that the plasma is a bit crisper, but in all seriousness, you can't really notice a considerable difference unless you are viewing the new dvds.
3. Cost Cost Cost. The 42" plasma panasonic is the same exact price, and has roughly half the lifetime if treated correctly.
4. HDMI/SD. This TV doesn't have the common glitch that a lot of the sony and samsong sets do when trying to switch from an incoming HDMI connection to any other type. I am free to swap between my HDMI dvd player, to my playstation 3, and then to my standard Digital Cable connection. This was the main deal breaker between this and the Samsong rear projection television.

As far as cons go, I can only find the usual in all flat screen televisions.
1. Viewing closer than 3 feet is not good. And at hard angles, for example, lying flat on the floor, can be a bit harsh.

Since it has been in my home, I have placed it on a corner in the living room and can view it without a problem within the full 90 degrees of the room without noticing any distortion. No signs of burn in and it still runs flawlessly.

I would recommend this television, or any of the other same style panasonic rear projection LCD televisions.

If you are looking for the standard flat without the deeper back I would recommend going towards the Panasonic plasma televisions. I checked the 42" model out extensively and found it to be superb in view and style, as well as input switching.

First of all, this is my first HD LCD TV. I've done research for the last year trying to find the right TV for the right price.

After looking at Sony, Samsung, Sharp LCD's and the Samsung LED DLP, I stumbled upon the Philips 2PFL7422D on the web. After doing some research on this TV I found that it had all the pro's of the other big name brands but with out any of the con's, such as banding(Sharp) or clouding(Sony)(Note, this information was gathered from other reviews, I had not seen either of these phenomenon's my self).

I'm very happy with this TV. One thing I really like it the screen isn't shiny like Samsung's high end models I was also interested in. My TV is in a very bright location with lot of windows and a shiny screen was a really turn off even though the Samsung's LCD's review very well.

Some things to be aware of is the refresh is 60hMz (120hMz is the current high mark) and the HDMI is 1.0, not 1.3. Also the remote feels cheap but is easy to use.

I'm not a audio/video buff by any means, but I do understand the tech. I have a Xbox 360 and Wii hooked up, both through component cable, and they work great. I played Guitar hero 2 and didn't notice any delay between picture and sound. I also connected it to Comcast Digital and the HD looks great. Watched football this weekend and didn't notice any blur.

If your looking for high quality at a great value, check this TV out.

I did lots of research, two weeks worth..it all came down to LG vs Samsung Ln52A650 but let me tell you my gut feeling was to try the 52LG60, it's all that is advertize..Quality picture, set up and options. Lots of people complain about the sound systems on large LCD but that why people buy Home Theater Systems. I will definetely recomend, you won't regret it.

I spent a lot of time reviewing different big-screen HDTVs. When it came down to buying one, this is the one I wanted because it had all of the right specs. I liked the full 1080p that most plasmas don't have. I also liked that you could see it from a wide viewing angle, unlike the rear projection sets. I also liked that it had 3 HDMI inputs instead of just 2 so that I could plug my satellite, my PS3, and still have an empty HDMI slot for a computer, or HD-DVD player (as opposed to blu-ray, just in case), or whatever else might come along.

We got the TV, and I knew what to expect with HDTV. But I was still amazed at how extraordinary the picture was. I'm really glad we got the full 1080, because the over-the-air broadcasts were sending 1080, and it was breathtaking. I didn't necessarily want to watch the show that was on, but we sat and just stared at the picture! It was phenomenal. So much detail! The picture is amazing, and with the ColorBurst, and the Dynamic Lighting, this TV does a great job at producing a great picture.

My only complaint is that there is only 1 S-Video input. It seemed kind of odd since there are 3 HDMI inputs, and 2 more component HD inputs. I still have a couple of things that produce S-Video, and so I have to route them through my stereo, and use that as the switch. I'm also surprised that the PC-input is a 15-pin Dsub (VGA-type) instead of the newer DVI inputs. But that isn't a show-stopper either, since it's easy enough to get adapters. So make sure you plan out how you want to connect this TV before you get it, especially if you have some older equipment. If everything you have is new, then you'll have absolutely no problems connecting to it. I'm giving this a 5-star rating because I LOVE the picture, and everything works great! ... More info

I looked into many 52 inch LCDs and finally settled on the LG. Company reputation and history were a factor in my final decision. I considered the Samsung 650 but the red glow, reflection of light and software and service concerns and decided to get the LG. It is in a room that has a cathedral ceiling with windows and glass sliding door on the south wall. The only reflection effects your view when you are on the opposite side of the windows. Even then it still is very viewable and from angles from window side and straight on it is hardly noticable. Really a great buy for the price and happy with everything. TI've wanting to dive into HD TVs for quite some time now. I ordered this beautiful, glossy, thin behemoth. I ordered the TV for only $1300 versus where I originally found it watching HSN selling for $2300. The product was ordered through Tiger Direct and I received the TV within one week. The packing stated the weight was 112 lbs. My tiny girlfriend and I were able to carry it around with ease though. No dead pixels or physical damage to the TV what so ever. I hooked up the HD cable, XBOX 360, and my surround sound system. I played Gears of War 2 & Halo 3 immediately. The colors were simply amazing except for the range of black. There was no blur during 10 hours of straight playtime. The sound wasn't bad when I unhooked my surround sound for TV shows, but during the play of XBOX there was a difference not too big though. There are plenty of jacks on this TV and I've even hooked up my laptop to the TV with no problems at all. I can even sit away from the TV with a wireless mouse/keyboard linked to my laptop and can still read websites just fine. All in all I'm very happy with this purchase. Thank-You LG & Amazon... The packaging was adequate. No frills , but thats how I like it. Cut costs where it doesn't hurt.

Weight, Heavy but manageable. Me and a little creativity put on top of my mantle.

Bezel and overall appearance are great. The Bezel trim is glossy but not mirror glossy like my Vizio.

Setup was simple.

Menu is very intuitive and easy to navigate.
The remote is also no frills , I like this too. However it is very light and one of the most comfortable I have held in a long time. Very easy to operate without looking.

Picture quality is far better than the westies I am used to seeing in the retail locations. Not gray at all. The night before I watched Spider Man 3 via Blu ray on my friends 52" Sony Bravia. Last night I played the exact same movie and used the same player. I, nor my wife could tell a difference. Maybe side by side there " may" have been a difference but nothing we either noticed. I surely saw no $1200 difference!

The spine/ waterfall design came in very handy as I hooked up various connections. I still have not tried my HTPC.

When displaying OTA content natively there is a row or two of pixels of "snow". I beleive others have posted about this. However at my distance "FILL" and "OVERSCAN" do just fine.

I was about to buy this TV on Amazon but was surprised to find this at a better price at the traditional local retailer Video Only. There were very few reviews of this TV on [...] which helped cement my decision. I am by no means a pro at evaluating but this is my third LCD TV purchase of which have included a Sharp 37", Sony 46" and now this Toshiba. I used to also own a Toshiba rear-projection HD TV so am familiar with Toshiba televisions. While I have only had it for a day all in this is a great TV, particularly given how thin the bezel is. This TV is only 47 3/4" wide which is about as wide as my old 46" Sony but now includes 52" of screen real estate. My living room had an area that was 48" so only had 2 choices that I new of including a Mitsubishi and this Toshiba. I was not that impressed with the Mitsubishi display and found it to be over-priced compared to the Toshiba.

When I opened up the box I was immediately amazed at how sleek and modern the screen looked. It looked great just sitting there in my living room. When I turned it on I was shocked by how much cleaner it looked than my old Sony particularly with HD inputs. Blu-ray alone was better than being in a movie theater particularly with Pirates of the Caribbean. Like any high def TV regular TV is disappointing compared to HD signals but it looks fine from my standpoint. The other big selling point on this TV is the 120hz processor which makes sports and action movies have less blur. I will update my review when I have more viewing time with it.... Find out more

After reading, exploring and hands on comparison I do not regret the purchase of this Toshiba LCD TV. I feel it is an outstanding value for a 52 inch lcd class tv. Toshiba's new 5 gig processor combined with the 120Hz smooth's action transitions as well as delivering outstanding darks and vibrant colors. My family room is well lit with sunlight during the day and there is no screen glare. The picture is very clear and sharp as well. The set is extremely impressive with an HD signal. It does almost as well with just a regular digital signal from cable/antena. I also hooked up a older JVC DVD player using just the old RCA cables and was extremely surprised at how good the picture looked. very close to looking as good as HD. I am getting Toshiba's upscaling DVD player, its on order, and will be using it soon. The remote is a breeze to use. Its simple to find which format to use for displaying the signal. Toshiba has done their homework. They should get back some of their market share that they lost to Samsung. I would stack this LCD against any other 50+ inch LCD HDTV out there. I also am using a Philips home theater sound system and the audio is outstanding. The onboard speaker does an good job for every day viewing but won't compair to a home theater system. I would buy this product again, hands down. Look closely at this TV if you are looking at 120Hz LCD HDTV's. I also consitered the 55 inch 670U with the simulated 240Hz. Even if it was a true 240Hz I would have still opted for the 645U 120hz. I believe the 240hz to be over kill combined with the cost difference between the two. compare the color to the Samsung... this TV is GREAT, June 6, 2009
We just bought this TV at Video Only and the guy threw in a Blu-ray player for free (and the original price was great)... my wife and I have been agonizing over the decision on what TV to choose. We sold our condo and sold the Panasonic industrial plasma we had on the wall as part of the deal. We were without a TV if you can imagine the horror.

The thing that really made us choose this TV over the Samsung 120hz 1080P 52" TOC was the depth and truthfullness of the color. I also felt that the blacks were blacker and the bright spots were brighter (contrast?). Don't get us wrong, the Samsung is a very bright and sharp TV and we really thought we were going to go in that direction. We looked at them side by side and in the end, we just couldn't get over the way the Toshiba recreated the colors compared to the Samsung that made golf greens almost 'neon green'. I can see why people are "drawn" to the Samsung tv's though... the colors are so vivid... but to me, they are a bit over done (and likely its an attempt by Samsung to attract you to their tv... "just pick the one that you are drawn to" says the guy at the big box store... oh, you mean the brightest one?).

In the end, my recommendation would be to go to a good store and look at these tv's side by side. When watching a movie or an HD tv show, do you want to be subjected to *intense* (possibly overdone) colors, or to something that is (in our opinion) a bit more *real*. The list price on this TV is about $500 less than the Samsung as well. :) ... Find out more
